BUFFALO CITY CYCLING

Buffalo City Cycling

Buffalo City Cycling (BCC) is recognised as one of the three primary regional organisations (districts) dedicated to fostering the vibrant cycling community in the Eastern Cape Province. Affiliated with Cycling South Africa, we play a crucial role in the administration, development, and promotion of cycling activities throughout the region, ensuring that enthusiasts of all levels have the opportunity to engage in this fantastic sport.

BCC is actively involved in organising and hosting a diverse range of cycling events that cater to both competitive cyclists and those seeking a more leisurely ride. We take pride in our strong collaborations with local cycling clubs and groups, enabling us to effectively develop, enhance, and maintain cycling facilities and trails in the area.

Our region consistently produces numerous cyclists who compete at national and international events. We strive to support these athletes both financially and logistically through fundraising efforts and the acquisition of sponsors.

BCC proudly supports its community and fosters a welcoming environment for everyone. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a newcomer, we are dedicated to celebrating all aspects of cycling in our community.

Cycling Disciplines

Whether you cycle for fitness, social interaction, adventurous thrills, or the excitement of competitive racing, there is a cycling discipline that suits your interests.

Cycling encompasses a diverse range of disciplines, each with its own techniques, equipment, and competitive formats. Currently, the most popular cycling disciplines in our area are Mountain Biking, Road Cycling, and Track Cycling.

Each discipline provides unique experiences and caters to a wide variety of cycling enthusiasts, making this sport versatile and exhilarating for everyone involved. Enjoy the journey of discovering your favorite!

Mountain Biking (MTB)

Mountain biking is an exhilarating off-road cycling sport that combines adventure with rugged terrains, appealing to those who thrive on challenges. Specialised bikes equipped with wide tires, sturdy frames, and advanced suspension systems are utilised to navigate diverse and demanding landscapes such as rocky trails, forests, and mountains.

There are a substantial number of recreational and social cyclists, who regularly ride the many trails and events available in the region.

The most popular competitive form of mountain biking in our area is XC (Cross Country).

Road Cycling

Road cycling typically takes place on paved routes and emphasises endurance, speed, aerodynamics, and efficiency over long distances. This discipline features specially designed road bikes with lightweight or aerodynamic frames, narrow tires, drop handlebars, and multiple gears to optimise performance and handling. It is crucial to remember that cyclists often share the road with motor vehicles; therefore, it's important to understand the rules of the road and remain vigilant at all times.

A significant number of recreational and social cyclists regularly ride in organised groups and participate in various events within the region. Competitive road cycling is arguably the most recognisable cycling discipline, with many famous races broadcast worldwide

Track Cycling

Track cycling is an exhilarating form of bicycle racing that occurs on specially constructed banked tracks known as velodromes. The track bicycles designed for this discipline prioritise high speeds and superior aerodynamics, and they typically do not have brakes or gears. This sport is highly specialised and competitive, emphasising power, speed, and tactical strategy.

Given the unique equipment and specialised venues, track cycling has limited social interaction compared to other cycling disciplines. However, the competitive landscape is diverse, featuring up to 10 different events that can lead to electrifying races.

Event Calendar

Buffalo City Cycling organises and hosts numerous events within the district, as well as some provincial races. We also assist clubs and external organizations in managing their events.

The event information outlined below is current at the time of publication. Please always reach out to the relevant event organiser or check their social media pages for the most up-to-date information.

Schools Cycling

Buffalo City Cycling is passionate about opening up the world of cycling to our children.  We actively engage with schools to promote the sport and work hard to establish cycling as an official school sport in primary and secondary schools.  We host programs and workshops to train parents and teachers in the roles of coaches and team managers.  Find out more about schools cycling and how you, or your school, can become involved by visiting the BCC Schools Cycling page.

The importance of sport for development

Starting a sport during your school years is one of the most impactful investments you can make in your future self. At this age, the primary focus is on discovery and enjoyment; playing for the sheer fun of the game builds a positive association with physical activity that lasts a lifetime. Beyond the immediate joy of the playground, sports serve as a "microcosm of life," teaching essential soft skills like discipline, resilience, and teamwork in a low-stakes environment. As you transition into adulthood, the technical foundations and mental toughness developed early on provide a significant competitive edge, making it far easier to achieve high-level success. Whether you reach a professional podium or simply enjoy the peak health and social connections that come with being an athlete, the habits formed in school act as the ultimate springboard for both personal and professional excellence.
